How it works

One request.
Everything that happens next.

You send one message. Everything after it is work you would otherwise do yourself — reading the job, finding businesses that can actually do it, making them quote against the same thing, and choosing between them. This is all of it, in order, including the parts a person still does by hand.

Demand

Live agent

  1. my Model Y needs a full detail before Friday
  2. Got it. At the house, or will you drop it off?
  3. at the house

Everything on this page happens after that third message.

Illustrative conversation.

01Understand

A sentence becomes a specification.

A business cannot quote on “needs a detail”. It can quote on a vehicle class, a scope of work, a place and a window. Demand’s first job is to turn the first thing into the second without making you fill in a form.

What you wrote

“my Model Y needs a full detail before Friday”

No category chosen, no service picked from a list, nothing spelled out. This is the whole input.

02Qualify

One question back, and only if it changes the price.

Whether the work happens at your house or at a unit changes who can bid and what they charge. Whether you want the seats shampooed changes the job itself. Those get asked. Your postcode does not, because Demand already has it, and a question whose answer moves nothing is a cost with no return — every extra exchange is a chance to lose someone who was two minutes from buying.

  • At the house, or drop-off?Asked
  • Do the seats need shampooing?Asked
  • Which suburb are you in?Not asked
  • What is your budget? Not asked

03Remember

The household graph, and what it is allowed to hold.

Demand keeps the facts that change what you get quoted, and files them against your household rather than against a single purchase. That is the difference between a quote form and an agent: the second request starts from what the first one established.

2023 Tesla Model Y
Changes the quote
Redmond, WA
Decides who can reach you
Prefers work done at the house
Rules out drop-off only
Leans towards quality over price
Breaks close decisions

Demand learns the useful stuff. Not everything.

A one-off instruction — “cheapest option, just this time” — changes one purchase and is not filed as a standing preference. What has been kept is listed on your profile, in plain language, and every line of it is yours to correct or delete. Nothing in the graph is sold, and none of it is shown to a business.

Demand

Live agent

  1. do the car again next week
  2. The Model Y, full detail at the house? I’ll go back out to the market.
  3. yep

Six words, and the specification is already complete.

Illustrative conversation.

04Source, and structure the market

One job. Many businesses.

The specification goes out as an invitation to quote, to businesses that can genuinely do that work in that area. Every one of them receives the same job, written the same way — which is the only reason the numbers that come back can be compared at all.

How a business is chosen to receive it

  1. They do the category of work the specification describes.
  2. They cover the area, and can work at the place you asked for.
  3. They can start inside the window.
  4. They have agreed to Demand’s terms, including how a customer’s details are handled.

Businesses do not buy their way onto this list and cannot pay to be invited more often. Nobody is invited to quote on work they are not set up to do.

What the business receives

They see
  • Full interior + exterior
  • Seat shampoo
  • Mobile, Redmond area
  • This week
They do not see
  • Your name
  • Your number
  • Your address
  • What you would pay

Your details reach exactly one business — the one you choose — and only once you book.

05Compete, and normalise

Four prices mean nothing until they cover the same job.

This is the step that makes the rest possible, and it is the one nobody does for themselves. Quotes arrive in different shapes — different inclusions, different exclusions, different assumptions about where the work happens. Demand restates each one against the original specification before anything is compared.

The specification

Full detail, inside and out

  • Full interior and exterior
  • Seat shampoo included
  • At the house — no drop-off
  • Before the weekend

Every offer below is measured against this, not against the others.

6 offers, restated against one specification

  • Rainier Mobile DetailFriday · Complete scope, wax included$189
  • Lakeview Auto SalonStart of next week · Complete scope, 90-day warranty$209
  • Same-Day Auto CareTomorrow · Complete scope, priority slot$229

A person at Demand confirms the terms of an offer with the business before a buyer is shown it. Nothing unverified is ever ranked. That check is a phone call, and it is the step most likely to stay human the longest.

Illustrative offers from invented businesses.

06Rank, and recommend

Eligibility first. Then what you asked for.

Ranking happens in two stages, and the order matters more than the weights. An offer that cannot do the job is not a cheaper alternative — it is a different job — so it is removed before any scoring happens rather than scored down and left near the top.

Stage one — the hard gate

Scope, place and — when you said the timing is what matters — the window. These are pass or fail. Nothing here is a trade-off.

  • Eastside Shine Co.$169

    Cannot come to you

  • Bargain Bay Auto Spa$99

Does not cover interior, seat shampoo

Removed offers are never hidden. They appear in your comparison with the reason attached, because an answer that quietly omits the cheapest number is indistinguishable from one that is hiding something.

Stage two — what survives is scored

Six components, weighted according to what you said mattered on this purchase. The weighting shifts with the objective; the components do not.

  • PriceAgainst comparable pricing for this specification
  • QualityRating and review volume, with its source
  • ReliabilityCompleted jobs, no-shows, disputes
  • AvailabilityHow well the start fits your window
  • ScopeHow completely the offer covers what you asked for
  • WarrantyWhat is guaranteed afterwards, and for how long

Demand’s fee and any commercial relationship with a business are not on this list, and there is no field for them on a scored offer.

Same six offers. Five questions. Three different answers.

What you are optimising for is part of the request, not a filter you apply afterwards. Say “cheapest” and Demand means it — that is an explicit rule, not a heavier weight on price.

What you get back

One answer, and everything it beat.

A recommendation is a default, not a decision. It arrives with the reasoning, the price against comparable pricing for that specification, and every competing offer one tap away — including the ones that were removed and why. You can take it, open the alternatives, or ask for something else entirely.

There were 4 offers that could do this job. The cheapest of them was $159. Demand did not recommend it, and the sentence under the recommendation says so before you have to notice it yourself.

07Book, and what happens after

Choosing is the part that is yours.

You book.

Nothing is charged until you press Book, and Demand never books on your behalf. Until then no business knows who you are.

One business gets your details.

The one you picked, at the moment you pick them. The others are told the job is gone and learn nothing about you.

You pay the price you were shown.

The all-in price is what you pay. Demand is paid by the business, out of what it receives, and only when the work completes.

All of this is built, and Demand is starting deliberately small. The first markets run with a person confirming every offer’s terms with the business before a buyer sees it — Demand would rather complete a few purchases properly than automate a promise it cannot yet keep at volume. The behaviour described above is implemented in the product. Where a step is meant to stay human for now, this page says so rather than letting you assume otherwise.

08Questions

The awkward ones.

What does Demand cost me?
Nothing. Asking costs nothing, and you pay the all-in price you were shown — there is no buyer fee and no mark-up on top of the offer. Demand is paid by the business that wins the work, out of what it receives, and only when the job completes.
Can a business pay to rank higher?
No. Demand’s fee and any commercial relationship are not inputs to the score, and a scored offer has no field for them. It is a property of the code rather than a policy someone has to remember, and the build tests it.
Does the cheapest offer always win?
No — and it is not ignored either. Offers that cannot do the job are removed first, with the reason shown. Among the rest, the cheapest wins if you asked for the cheapest; otherwise price is one of six weighted components. When the recommendation costs more than a cheaper eligible offer, the explanation says so in its first sentence.
What do businesses see about me?
The job, the area and the timing. Not your name, your number, your address, or anything you have told Demand about your budget. Supplier visibility is an allowlist that denies by default, and your details reach exactly one business — the one you choose — and only once you book.
Do you sell my request to several businesses?
No. A request is an invitation to quote on a specific job, not a contact record, and it is never resold. No business buys the right to receive it.
Does Demand remember my information?
It keeps the facts that change what you get quoted — the vehicle, the area, how you like the work done — so the second request does not start from nothing. Your profile lists what has been kept, in plain language, and every line is yours to correct or delete.
What if I do not like the recommendation?
Open the alternatives and pick another, or tell Demand what was wrong with it and it will go back out. The recommendation is a default, not a decision, and nothing is booked until you say so.
What can I actually ask for today?
Demand is starting with car detailing, on the Eastside. Other categories are not open yet. You can still ask — what people ask for is how Demand decides what opens next — but it will tell you plainly rather than pretend it has supply it does not have.
Is Demand available everywhere?
No. Demand is starting on the Eastside of Seattle, deliberately narrow, and is building the supply for that one area before opening another. It is better to run a small market properly than a wide one badly.

Stop shopping around.
Ask Demand.
